About the stories
After The Hobbit hooked me on fantasy, my favorite escapist fiction became sword and sorcery. (From Bilbo Baggins to Conan the Barbarian.) Robert E. Howard defined it, Fritz Lieber polished it up, and Michael Moorcock gave it dark, terrible suffering. I just ate it up.
I’ve also come to love the sometimes creepy, sometimes poetic, always funny work of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I learned that almost any story can use a few laughs.
In later years I found historical fiction through authors such as Larry McMurtry and Patrick O’Brian. The heroes in this genre kick ass for sure, but they also grapple with the big problems of being human, especially in a world where they no longer fit. How does that translate to sword and sorcery? Although spells and stabbing are great, what does the fantasy hero grapple with when there's nobody left to stab?
So, I now write sword and sorcery, but I lean heavily on the other two genres for humor and humanity. I see my stories as that rare place where Conan cuts his way across Discworld deciding what to do with himself now that everybody in Cimmeria is wearing jeweled codpieces and eating toast.
